Tanya's Story

In October 2013 before I started spin I weighed 11 stone 7 lbs and was size 12-14. I started spin because I used to spin whilst at university and remembered it was a good way to release stress and to completely zone out and focus on the cycling. I wasn't enjoying my job at the time and I didn't want to go home, sit on the coach and get depressed over it, so I thought spin would be a good distraction from the stresses of everyday life.

I never necessarily had the intention to lose weight because I had tried exercising and dieting before, which had never worked. I began doing 1 class a week, then slowly built up to two and then three a week in the New Year. I noticed at this time that Les started to comment on my technique and told me to increase my resistance. I consciously tried to improve my technique week by week and push myself. I also booked a trip to Thailand for October 2014 and gave myself a goal to try to lose 2 stone by then so I would feel comfortable on the beach and also to be fitter to do more activities.

I noticed a couple of months after I started Spinning that I started to lose some weight, probably 1pound a week or two. In the New Year 2014 I started to reduce my portion sizes and downloaded a calorie app on my phone to try to curb what I was eating and I tried to eat a lot healthier. By March 2014, 5 months after I started Spinning I had lost 1 stone. I ran a 10K in May 2014 at a good time of 1 hr 1 min. In July 2014 I had lost two stone and cycled Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride of 38 miles from Bristol to Clevedon. I then started circuit classes to try to build strength and tone my muscles. At that point I couldn't even do 1 press up but I have certainly improved!

I now weigh 9 stone 7 lbs, which was my target weight and I am a size 8-10. I now pretty much eat what I like but my portions are nowhere near as big as they used to be and I still go Spinning 3 times a week and also do a circuit class, or I may do two circuit classes and one spin class depending what I have on that week. I feel the fittest and healthiest I have ever been. I have lots more energy and confidence in myself that I did not have this time last year. Circuit classes have definitely pushed me to my limits and I don't think I would have done the class had I not felt comfortable and I had the knowledge that I would improve week on week.

My goals for next year are to buy a road bike and do more outdoor cycling, perhaps even join a Triathlon group.

I wouldn't have lost this weight or become fitter without Les’s enthusiasm and drive. I love coming to classes at La-rev and it now feels like my routine, almost a second home. The people that go are friendly and supportive of each other. It feels so relaxed, not competitive or arrogant like some other gyms. We have a laugh but you also take Spinning and cycling very seriously and that helps to keep us focused and want to improve week on week.

Thank you for all your help and support in losing the weight and for making your classes so enjoyable. I feel like you are now a friend as well as an instructor and I really appreciate the way you have pushed me week on week to improve.
